Nautilus Wave - Description
The hike to Nautilus wave, also called the white wave is an easy, short hike for everyone through a fascinating pink and white colored landscape.
Take the Hwy 89 from Page (Az) to Kanab (Ut) and turn left after around 29 miles in direction to the BLM Paria Ranger Station and turn again left after a few feet to the white house campground (the dirt road straight ahead leads to the visitor center).
At our visit the road was in good condition and 4WD was not needed; depending on the weather this might be different. Heavy rain can make the road and the wash to Nautilus impassable. For road conditions ask at the ranger station.
After 1,6 miles you reach the parking place on the right hand in front of the wash housing the Nautilus wave. The walk starts at the trailhead near the nautilus wash, heading to the left. The wash is sandy and edged with pink and white cliffs. After 0,5 miles you can see the Nautilus rock on the right. You can reach the nautilus notch after some steps
from the wash, find your way over the 'shell' to look into the curved wave.
Nautilus wave is a short slot canyon formed like the shell of a sea snail from white and grey sandstone with delicate colored stripes and thin, narrow fins and ridges on the rippled surface. Nautilus wave can be seen on satellite maps (e.g., Google - Map 'Nautilus Wave').
